Baby Blisters & Burns From Inside, Then Mom Recalls What Was In His Mouth

Robert Rich A mother recently began to panic after watching her baby begin to blister and blacken, before realizing that he was literally cooking from the inside. However, it wasn’t until the family was at the hospital that she actually remembered what was in his mouth just a short time before it all started.
Danielle Hart and Dan Kirwan gave their son, Finley, some medicine to ease a cough. Shortly thereafter, things took quite a turn as the state of the boy’s health began to rapidly decline. Before long, the two were taking their child to Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire, England, after noticing his body was beginning to blister as if he was being cooked from the inside.

Doctors began a slew of tests and even tested a few theories, thinking the boy may have had the herpes simplex virus. However, the boy continued in his downward spiral.
At some point, his organs began to shut down and blood even began to pour from his mouth. This reality was made even worse on account of the boy catching a stomach bug while in Intensive Care, thereby further weakening his system.

Luckily, after four days, the problem was found. Finley was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare, life-threatening skin condition usually caused by a medication reaction or an infection. As it turns out, the Calprofen brand cough syrup, which Finley’s mother had given him, contained ibuprofen – which he was having a reaction to.

“We could’ve easily put him to bed that night, thinking he would be better in the morning, but Steven-Johnson Syndrome progresses so fast that he wouldn’t of stood a chance,” explained Danielle.
“He needed his dressings for his blisters changed every two-hours, but thankfully his pain was managed with morphine and mild sedatives,” she went on to say. “He also had creams, eye drops, and mouthwashes applied every two hours.”

After three long weeks, both Finley and his family were finally discharged home with the boy well on his way to recovery. His parents would like their story to act as a warning to other parents who may not know of the issue that can affect their children.
As we’ve said countless times before – it never hurts to be cautious, as there is nothing more valuable than your life. If something doesn’t feel right, seek medical attention. This is also an important reminder to know what you’re taking, and should a medical condition worsen, inform medical personnel of anything you’ve taken, including “harmless” medications bought over the counter.
