Dawn Parabellum
Ernie Chambers, Nebraska’s longest-serving state senator, has
recently made some bold claims about his skin color. Chambers has made
some crazy statements before, but this incident tops the list. After
saying what he would do if he was a white man, social media erupted in
disgust, but what’s worse is that there will be no consequences for what
he said.
The black Nebraska state senator has a history of making
inflammatory remarks, and he did so again on Tuesday. Chambers calls
himself an independent, but he leans more democrat than moderate and has
been known to rile up legislative sessions in Nebraska in the past. It
looks like he’s going to keep it up too.
Chambers said that he was so upset about a debate over a
gender identity and sexual orientation discrimination bill that he was
forced to watch the legislative session from his office. The reason he
watched the debate from his office, according to his own words, was that
he would resort to violence if he was there in person. “But the reason I
do it down there — if I was up here I’d probably pick these books up
and start throwing them around,” Chambers said.

However, that is actually kind of minor in comparison to what he said
next. Chambers added, “If I was a white guy, I’d go get my
semiautomatic weapon and come down here and mow everybody down.” There
was surprisingly little response to his comments. Nebraska Speaker Galen
Hadley did chastise Chambers for his ridiculous statement, but he
followed up by admitting that there isn’t much he can do about it.
Chambers is commenting from a position of not being able to
be held accountable for his threats. He is not only a lawmaker, but a
minority, and as we’ve seen lately, both are protected classes in
America. Chambers’ comments about gunning down his fellow lawmakers “if
he was a white guy” are racist and threatening. He should be held
accountable, but I’m not holding my breath. As we all know, a black
politician can do no wrong, and any warranted criticism of them is
dismissed as racism.
