With Switch Online, players will also be able to save their scores online after battling it out with other gamers from across the planet. This gives players the opportunity to copy and save their data, which is currently quite cumbersome.

The service also includes 20 classic NES games, including Super Mario Bros., Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario and The Legend Of Zelda.

Membership for the service, which works with an accompanying smartphone app, will cost US$3.99 (RM15.88) for a month, US$7.99 (RM31.81) for three months or US$19.99 (RM79.58) per year, with access to the games included in this price.

Sony and Microsoft, meanwhile, are charging fees of currently around US$60 (RM239) a year for online multiplayer games. — dpa
