Lil Wayne shot himself in the chest after mom said he couldn't rap

Lil Wayne is ready to unpack some dark memories on his upcoming album, “Tha Carter V.”

The 35-year-old rapper, whose long-awaited album will be released this fall, played tunes for Billboard. In one particular song, Wayne admitted he once attempted suicide.

When he was 12, Wayne took a gun and shot himself in the chest — narrowly missing his heart. His behavior was a reaction to his mother banning him from rapping.

“He just told me one day that he was ready to address it now,” Wayne’s longtime friend Mack Maine told the publication. “Just being an adult, reaching a level of maturity and comfort where it’s like, ‘I want to talk about this because I know a lot of people out here might be going through that.’”

Wayne, according to the article, may have added those lyrics to the song after the suicides of Kate Spade and Anthony Bourdain.

But looking into his catalog, Wayne has previously addressed the incident as an accident — once on the song “London Roads” from the album “Free Weezy Album,” and again on the Solange Knowles song “Mad.”

The suicide attempt made Wayne’s mother, Jacida, see how passionate he was about a career in music. She soon allowed her son to join Cash Money, but she had one stipulation: No curse words.

In 1998, he signed with Cash Money and the following year released the hit song “The Block Is Hot.” It was, of course, clean.
