Wilder knocked down Fury twice and retained his WBC heavyweight title despite Fury controlling the bout
LOS ANGELES -- The biggest heavyweight fight in the United States since
2002 took place Saturday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and
boy did it deliver ... though the result may not have been what fans
wanted. WBC champion Deontay Wilder defended his title against fellow
unbeaten heavyweight Tyson Fury in a split draw. Judges scored the bout
115-111 for Wilder, 114-110 for Fury and 113-113 down the middle.
The first pay-per-view heavyweight title fight to take place in the
United States since Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson was also contested for
Fury's lineal championship, which he will also retain. Fury (27-0-1, 19
KOs) is the first opponent Wilder (40-0-1, 39 KOs) did not finish.
Wilder knocked Fury down twice, including a thunderous knockdown early
in the 12th and final round that appeared to take Fury out for good.
Instead, Fury sat up late in the count and continued, finishing the
round and the fight.
