Canada will ban travelers showing any symptoms associated with Covid-19 from domestic flights and trains beginning Monday at noon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today.
Under the new Transport Canada rule, "people showing any signs whatsoever of Covid-19 will be denied boarding on all domestic flights and intercity passenger trains," he said during his daily briefing from outside his home at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.
The Trudeau government has already implored Canadians who are feeling sick to stay home and has legally required Canadians returning from abroad to isolate themselves for 14 days once they return. But the new rule indicates the status quo hasn't done enough to keep symptomatic Canadians off planes and trains.
While Trudeau said the measures Canadians have already taken are "beginning to work," individuals "need to continue to do what is necessary to prevent the spread of Covid-19.”
Trudeau said airlines and train service providers will be responsible for complying with the rule. He indicated the rule doesn't apply to interprovincial bus service because that transportation mode doesn't fall under federal jurisdiction.
